Clocks and watches, whose trains normally require the wheels to drive the pinions, use epicycloidal tooth forms which work satisfactorily in this configuration, with the possible exception of the motion work, in which the drivers are the pinions and thus often use involute forms.

As you can see, the elliptical comes the closest that we can to approximating the theoretical perfect form. The way I did it, years ago was using the "offset" method, after Goodrich, Perkins, and others.
