Speaker Mike Johnson is poised to seek Democratic help to pass his government funding plan after a conservative rebellion derailed his initial measure.

After a controversial measure requiring proof of citizenship to vote – pushed by conservative Republicans – was dropped, bipartisan negotiations began in earnest, with leadership agreeing to extend government funding into mid-December.

After sidestepping the House Rules Committee, Speaker Mike Johnson will have to rely on Democrats to pass a short-term funding bill.

The short-term bill is expected to get a vote on the House floor this week as Congress faces a Sept. 30 shutdown deadline.
